The Red Badge of Design

Every designer has a few tools which they wish they could have surgically attached to their body in some way so that they would never be without them. One of these is a pen, another is a steel ruler, and then there's the X-Acto knife. Yes, we love our razor blades, but sometimes they turn against us. We all know that invariably, sooner or later, we will seriously cut ourselves with an X-Acto. One of my design professors instructed us that we were not to use X-Acto knives on his project after 10 o'clock at night and that we were also not to use them while under the influence of any substances whatsoever. (No one listened.)

Yesterday at work, I slipped with the X-Acto knife and sliced my index finger on my left hand open. If you are a designer, you already know that this is the finger that I sliced because that is the finger that you have sliced once or many times. (On a side note, after nearly passing out I realized that no one at work cares if you pass out or not. Ah, business relationships...) My mom knew exactly what had happened as soon as I told her I cut myself at work.

To commemorate the event and apologize to my finger, I bought a mug. Because I work near the MOMA Design Store and it tempts me every morning and afternoon.

Comments:
I had a friend at work last summer who made an online "injury blog" with pics and everything. Every bruise, scar, etc was documented. And plus, we were working outdoors doing grounds work...you know, saws, shovels and sticks can do a lot of damage.

Glad you didn“t actually pass out. Miss ya
